Welcome to Balai — an emerging brand by Philine Baak and Yamuna LaiLai, where textile, material research, and visual storytelling come together through upcycled fashion. By combining our last names and artistic visions, Balai became a space to explore alternative ways of creating within the fashion and textile industry.

Working primarily with secondhand yarns, reclaimed textiles, and existing materials, the brand was created from a desire to design consciously and intuitively, without contributing to unnecessary waste streams. Through handmade knitwear, crochet, and textile manipulation, Balai investigates how discarded or overlooked fibers can be transformed into garments with renewed emotional and material value.

Within the brand, textile is approached not only as a material, but also as a carrier of identity and connection. Philine’s work draws on themes of nature, intimacy, and organic structures, while Yamuna introduces playful spatial elements and experimentation in form. Together, these perspectives merge into tactile collections that reflect softness, transformation, and interconnectedness.

Alongside its visual and artistic identity, Balai represents a growing interest in the future of textile production and material innovation. The long-term ambition is to expand beyond reclaimed materials towards working with more responsible fiber systems and bio-based alternatives, exploring how fashion and textile design can contribute to a more regenerative and conscious industry.
